Stricture dilation, or widening of a narrow bowel segment, is used for a variety of conditions, most commonly for esophageal strictures.
Depending on the size and the location of the narrowing, doctors may use different types of balloons (inflated with water or air) or rubber bougies to expand the size of the esophagus or other organ.
Dilation can be applied once or in a series of procedures until the desired size opening is achieved.
